Alameda County District Attorney’s Office Announces Success of Operation Cross Country in Rescuing Human Trafficking Victims Oakland, CA. August 3, 2023 The Alameda County District Attorney's Office in collaboration with the Contra Costa District Attorney’s office and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) announced the successful efforts of Operation Cross Country, a nationwide initiative aimed at combating human trafficking.  Led by the FBI and joined by 29 other Bay Area law enforcement agencies, the two-week initiative led to 17 operations in the Bay Area, resulting in significant outcomes. Oakland Man Charged with Attempted Murder of Ex-Girlfriend: Alameda County District Attorney Takes Firm Action Oakland, CA - Cornelius Jeremiah Smith was arrested on July 20, 2023 and charged with attempted murder of a former girlfriend whom he shot multiple times with a semi-automatic weapon. The attempted murder charge includes enhancements for great bodily injury and the use of a gun. Defendant Smith faces two prior strike convictions, and a minimum sentence of 40 years to life if he is convicted of this violent crime. The harrowing incident occurred on July 13, 2023.
