DA Pamela Price Charges Man with Attempted Murder of an Alameda County Deputy Sheriff

OAKLAND, CA — Today, OAKLAND, CA — Today, Alameda County District Attorney Pamela Price announced that Joel Gonzalez (34) was charged with multiple felonies for allegedly trying to run over an Alameda County deputy sheriff during an investigation of stolen vehicles. The charges include an enhancement for great bodily injury and an enhancement for being out on bail when the alleged crime was committed. If convicted and sentenced to all charges, Mr. Gonzalez faces 20 years to life in prison.

The complaint alleges that on or about July 24, 2024, the defendant was driving a stolen vehicle and used it to allegedly strike the deputy after the deputy deployed spike strips to disable the vehicle. After being hit by the vehicle, the victim was thrown 20 feet forward and suffered internal injuries, including a laceration to his right arm.

Mr. Gonzalez is charged with attempted murder of a peace officer with great bodily injury, assault upon a peace officer, possession of a firearm by a felon, possession of a controlled substance with a firearm, two counts of unlawful driving or taking of a vehicle, and two counts of receiving stolen property.

He is scheduled to be arraigned tomorrow at 9 a.m. in Department 702 at the East County Hall of Justice in Dublin.
