DISTRICT ATTORNEY URSULA JONES DICKSON ANNOUNCES CHARGES FOLLOWING DANGEROUS DRIVING INCIDENT ON BAY BRIDGE

May 7, 2026

Oakland, CA — Alameda County District Attorney Ursula Jones Dickson announced today that charges have been filed against Jose Mendoza (30) in connection with the May 3, 2026, dirt bike and off-road vehicle sideshow on the Bay Bridge.

According to investigators, officers assigned to a sideshow enforcement detail attempted to detain a group of illegal dirt bike and off-road vehicle riders operating unlawfully on the bridge. During the operation, a portion of the roadway was temporarily closed to safely contain the riders and protect the public.

Authorities allege that one rider, identified as Mendoza, drove recklessly within the blocked-off section of the bridge at high speed while marked California Highway Patrol vehicles pursued him. Officers reported that Mendoza drove with willful and wanton disregard for the safety of officers and the public, despite numerous law enforcement personnel being on foot in the immediate area.

Investigators further allege that after Mendoza slowed down and officers attempted to detain him, he resisted arrest by refusing commands, attempting to flee, and attempting to strike an officer during the encounter.

“This conduct created an extremely dangerous situation for law enforcement officers and snarled traffic on the Bay Bridge,” said District Attorney Ursula Jones Dickson.

The defendant has been charged with two counts of felony evasion and one misdemeanor count of battery on a police officer.  At the time of this incident, Mr. Mendoza was on felony probation, and a petition to revoke probation based upon these allegations has been filed.
