Oakland, CA—Alameda County District Attorney Ursula Jones Dickson announced today that Jason Hoopes, a former high school music teacher, was sentenced to six years and eight months in state prison after pleading no contest to and found guilty of sexually assaulting a student.

Hoopes admitted to arranging to meet with a minor with the intent to commit a sexual offense, in violation of Penal Code section 288.4; oral copulation with a person under the age of 18, in violation of Penal Code section 287(b); and unlawful sexual intercourse with a person under the age of 18, in violation of Penal Code section 261.5(c). In addition to his prison sentence, he will be required to register as a lifetime sex offender pursuant to Penal Code section 290.

The investigation revealed that Mr. Hoopes exploited his position as the victim’s music teacher by committing these crimes, betraying the trust placed in him by the student, the student’s family, and the school community.

“This case represents a profound betrayal of trust,” said District Attorney Ursula Jones Dickson. “Our foremost concern is, and always will be, with the well-being of the survivor.”
