Oakland Man Charged With Killing His Mother and Attempting To Murder Two Others In Berkeley Hills Oakland, CA. September 27, 2023 – District Attorney Pamela Price’s Office has charged Jonah Jeremiah Roper, 36, with murder and eight other felony counts, including attempted murder, first-degree residential burglary, second-degree commercial burglary, evading an officer and receiving stolen property. According to the Oakland Police Department on September 23, 2023, the evidence shows Jonah Roper stabbed his mother several times at her home on Overlook Drive in Berkeley. When his mother’s fiancée tried to intervene, Roper also attacked him with the knife. The injured fiancée went to a neighbor’s house and tried to hide. Minor defendant 1 was charged with assault with a firearm 245 (a)(2) along with gun enhancements, including shooting at an occupied area. The maximum exposure for assault with a firearm is 4 years. Minor defendant 2 was charged with minor in possession of a firearm within 1000 feet of a school along with gun possession charges, including carrying a loaded weapon in public. Alameda County District Attorney’s Office Awarded $2M Grant to Fund First-of-its-kind Model to Combat Organized Retail Theft Oakland, CA. September 14, 2023 – The Alameda County District Attorney’s Office (ACDAO) was awarded a significant two million dollar grant to fund a new prosecution unit to address the growing issue of Organized Retail Theft (ORT) in the community. The first-of-its-kind model will focus on the investigation and prosecution of organized retail theft crimes, using a vertical prosecution model. Under the grant program, a Deputy District Attorney, an Inspector II, and Senior Program Specialist will be assigned to the unit, working together to investigate and prosecute ORT cases from start to finish. “ORT cases are time intensive and complex.
