Dublin, CA – Today, Chief Assistant District Attorney Royl Roberts announced that a jury found Oscar Arevalo-Baquiax (24) guilty of second-degree murder for the death of Rigoberto Perez (49). Mr. Arevalo-Baquiax was also found guilty of second-degree murder for the death of Rigoberto Perez Jr. (22).

The testimony and evidence presented at trial showed that on or about September 24, 2022, Mr. Arevalo-Baquiax and a female friend were attending a birthday party at Mr. Perez’s apartment in Hayward. Witness testimony stated that at about 4:00 AM, a heated argument began between Mr. Arevalo-Baquiax and Mr. Perez Jr. about the female guest Mr. Arevalo-Baquiax brought to the party, and they were both asked to leave. The incident prompted a physical fight between Mr. Perez and his son. The jury also heard evidence that 15 to 30 minutes after leaving the party, Mr. Arevalo-Baquiax reentered the apartment, grabbed a knife from the kitchen, entered the bedroom where Mr. Perez, Jr., and Mr. Perez, Sr. were still fighting, and without provocation, Mr. Arevalo-Baquiax fatally stabbed both men. Testimony further established that with his hands covered in blood, Mr. Arevalo Baquiax admitted to his female friend that he had just stabbed both father and son.

“I want to thank the jury for their service and careful deliberation in this trial,” said Chief Assistant District Attorney Royl Roberts. “I also want to congratulate the prosecution team: Deputy District Attorney Mark Bennett and Inspector Irabe Taylor for securing the conviction, and District Attorney Victim Advocate Monica Torres for her support of the witnesses in this case.

Oscar Arevalo-Baquiax faces 32 years to life in state prison. He is scheduled to be sentenced on April 24, 2025, in Department 708, at the East County Hall of Justice in Dublin.
