Mr. Watts Faces 23 Years in State Prison
December 19, 2024
Oakland, CA – Today, Chief Assistant District Attorney Royl Roberts announced that a jury found Camren Watts (23) guilty of two counts of assault with a semiautomatic firearm. These charges include two aggravating factors of violence or bodily harm and prior juvenile convictions for Mr. Watts for personally using a firearm to shoot into a car and seriously injuring a man. The jury also found Mr. Watts guilty of one count of shooting into an occupied vehicle, one count of unlawful firearm activity, and one count of carrying a loaded firearm in public.
The testimony and evidence presented at trial showed that the unprovoked shooting happened on or about 1 P.M. on September 02, 2020, near the intersection of 51st Street and West Street in Oakland. That is where Mr. Watts fired his gun multiple times into a parked car where two unarmed men were sleeping. One victim suffered multiple wounds during the shooting. The other occupant in the vehicle was uninjured.
“I first want to thank the jury for their service and careful deliberation in this trial,” said Chief Assistant DA Royl Roberts. “I also want to congratulate the Prosecution Team for their hard work securing this conviction and recognize the Inspector on this assignment for their support throughout the case and jury trial. This guilty verdict reaffirms that anyone who uses a gun to harm people in our community will be held to account for their actions in a court of law.”
Camren Watts faces 23 years in state prison. He is scheduled to be sentenced on Monday, February 3, 2025, in Department 10 at the René C. Davidson Courthouse in Oakland.
