Oakland Man Charged with Attempted Murder of Ex-Girlfriend: Alameda County District Attorney Takes Firm Action

Oakland, CA – Cornelius Jeremiah Smith was arrested on July 20, 2023 and charged with attempted murder of a former girlfriend whom he shot multiple times with a semi-automatic weapon. The attempted murder charge includes enhancements for great bodily injury and the use of a gun. Defendant Smith faces two prior strike convictions, and a minimum sentence of 40 years to life if he is convicted of this violent crime.

The harrowing incident occurred on July 13, 2023. According to Oakland Housing Authority investigators, Smith fired multiple shots, striking his former girlfriend twice in the process. She was taken to the hospital in critical condition but is expected to survive.

District Attorney Price stated, “Violence against women in this community is rampant and intolerable. We are resolute in our efforts to protect victims, particularly women, and hold perpetrators accountable. Our aim is to send a clear message that such actions will not be tolerated in our community.”
